Social media is addictive and saturated with undisclosed ads. If consumers knew how many ads they were viewing, they would put their phones down.
Disrupting social media through litigation and policy.
Litigation Forward
While policy research and public engagement are important, meaningful change in this space often requires direct legal action. Deinfluence will pursue strategic litigation against influencers who disseminate undisclosed advertisements, corporations that rely on such practices to market their products, and social media platforms that fail to prevent or address deceptive advertising. Through these cases, we aim to establish accountability, set precedent, and strengthen protections for consumers in the digital marketplace.
Make the Law
Undisclosed advertisements are unlawful. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) provides clear requirements for influencers, and state consumer-protection statutes likewise prohibit deceptive and unfair advertising practices. Deinfluence will work to ensure that these laws are fully and consistently applied to social media platforms and to emerging technology companies—including those deploying artificial intelligence—in order to prevent and deter undisclosed advertising.
Advocate Policy
Deinfluence will advocate for policies on a state and federal level that disclose advertisers and create a healthier, less-addictive social media environment. We will support regulatory frameworks that hold platforms and advertisers accountable for transparent and responsible digital practices. We will promote research and data transparency to help policymakers understand the full impact of undisclosed advertising on users.
